PC getting weird...

My PC is getting weird. The PC that I usually used to access the internet, to do work, etc. *Sigh*

About a week plus ago, when the Singtel people come to fix the broadband, it was then that I detect that the CD-Writer was not functioning as it should be. It could not read any CDs that I placed in the drive.

I can't remember when is the last time I used it but I remember always used that drive rather than the normal CD-ROM drive when I need. And the last time I used was to burn some documents (doing some documents backup).

Yesterday, something weird happens again.

This time, my screen will black-out after I left it alone while I start the system. Shaking my mouse, pressing some keys on my keyboard doesn't light up my screen when my CPU is still running. Even I press restart, the CPU also won't restart and it does produce some form of beeping sound.

I had to manually press the Power Switch till the CPU shut down then I restart the whole system by pressing the Power Switch. I had to keep moving the mouse when my CPU is starting up so that the screen do not black out again.

Today, it is even worst. I manage to use it for a while in the morning with same problem as yesterday). But just now when I want to use it as I forgot to put Out of Office for my work email account. So I wanted to do so. This time, I can't even get to see my Window Screen for more than think at most 5-10 seconds and it black-out. This time even moving my mouse when the CPU start doesn't work at all.

I also realized that even my keyboard got no signal. I tried pressing 2 keys. The Caps Lock and the Num Lock. These 2 keys should produce lights or the lights be gone when you pressed them when the CPU is on. Yet, there is no reaction when I pressed these 2 keys.

Actually before all these happened, I had problem when I shut down my CPU. It always shut down very very slowly.

Now, I am using my dad's PC to come online to put Out of Office for my work email.

And now, I am even more and more unsure whether or not to change my Window 2000 to Window XP. Especially now that problems start to come out from my PC. I don't want to waste unnecessary money. I want to make sure that whatever I do to my PC and my dad's PC is worth the money.

I am having questions now like...

My PC
Why did my CPU take ages to shut down?
Why can't my CD-Writer drive reads?
Why my moniter, keyboard and mouse can't detect the signal from my CPU?
Why my moniter does come to life when the CPU is starting and why did it black-out?
What is the main problem or problems that caused these?

My dad's PC
Why can't he access the website he needs to for his work?
Why is his PC slow?
It prompt 'not enough virtual memory' before on the night when the broadband is fixed.
Why and what is virtual memory?

What is wrong with these 2 PCs?
How can I get these 2 PCs fixed?
How much money do I need to get them well?
Is it worth it to get them repair and change the window from window 2000 to window XP with the service charge of $100 per PC just to change to Window XP?
What is the Window XP that the IT technician told my dad that it cost around $150 each?
Is it the basic edition or the professional edition?
Will these problems re-occur?

I am going nuts when it comes to problems with CPU.

Even my TV in the living room is down when it had been repaired just less than or at most 3 months ago. It black-out again after it was fixed back. To get a new TV will cost money. Yet to get it repair, how long can it last? The previous repair only lasted not more than 3 months so how long can the next repair last?

*Sigh*
